Had you any idea that Emmett Till’s final words were some of boldest in American history?
Milam: “You still as good as I am?”
Milam: “You still ‘had’ white women?”
Keep in mind that that’s after two grown men had tortured him for hours. Milam would later say that, following that exchange, he had no choice but to kill the 14-year-old boy:
"Well, what else could we do? He was hopeless. I’m no bully; I never hurt a nigger in my life. I like niggers—in their place—I know how to work ‘em. But I just decided it was time a few people got put on notice. As long as I live and can do anything about it, niggers are gonna stay in their place. Niggers ain’t gonna vote where I live. If they did, they’d control the government. They ain’t gonna go to school with my kids. And when a nigger gets close to mentioning sex with a white woman, he’s tired o’ livin’. I’m likely to kill him. Me and my folks fought for this country, and we got some rights. I stood there in that shed and listened to that nigger throw that poison at me, and I just made up my mind. ‘Chicago boy,’ I said, ‘I’m tired of ‘em sending your kind down here to stir up trouble. Goddam you, I’m going to make an example of you—just so everybody can know how me and my folks stand.’"

All athletes don’t get free rides. No, they don’t get to graduate debt free. These kids starving and working like slaves all while their school makes billions off jersey sells, game attendance, TV deals and sponsorship deals. Can you not see how wrong it is to make that much money off of a person and then not cut them in on enough of a percentage eat a decent meal? Why should Jameis Winston, an 18 year old that won the Heisman trophy, as a freshman and led his team to a National Football Championship and is the biggest name on the baseball team, have to steal food? They made millions off his jersey last year. People filled up stadiums to watch him play. He’s doing more work than 90% of the country. I’m sure he’d work a part time job if he had time. Why can’t he afford crab legs? That’s called pimping and it’s bullshit.
I work in NCAA compliance. Right now, there are a lot of changes going on in governance that will be more effective into addressing the financial needs and concerns of the student-athlete.
I have varying opinions on the matter when I look through different lenses: that of an NCAA employee, that of an NCAA employee who works at a power 5 d1 school (there is a HUGE difference), that of a fan, that of a friend of student-athletes who do struggle…..there are many ways to look at this issue.
Being a former college D-1 student/athlete myself, I promise you there is absolute no reason these athletes show be hungry. The amount of money these schools make off these players is well over quadruple what ever scholarship amount they decide to give them. Also, NCAA has a point system that limits the amount of ” full-ride ” scholarships can give out. More college athletes than you’d like to believe are in the same boat as regular students as far as financial aid is concerned. If you really dive into how the NCAA works you’ll see how close to slavery it really is (money wise).
I opened our living room window to let the summer air in and just happened to be lucky when this was captured. Theodore looks ever so confused by Lilith’s sign of affection.
